Easter

It was a busy weekend, fun weekend. After going to a Celtics playoff game, John spent all day saturday busing it home for the holiday. For that I am thankful. Saturday was a rainy, foggy cool New England day. Sarah and I colored eggs, which she found fascinating, particularly enjoying the brightly egg-dyed paper towels underneath the wet eggs. She pulled the towel right out from under them and they all flew ceremoniously to the floor. She was quite pleased!
Since John was rolling into town after dinner, Sarah and I packed up and headed to the bus station. I like to park where I can see the bus in the distance as it exits off the highway. There is nothing like the anticipation of seeing your son for the first time in 4 months. Just joy.

And then he was home. The end.

Just kidding!

Sarah was all smiles and giggles to have John in the car. She misses him.
Sunday was finally a beautiful, sunny, warm day. Spring has been a long time coming this year in our area but Sunday was just perfect. We went to the cemetery where my mother is buried and then out to lunch. It was restful and fun.

Orthopedic Surgeon/Physiatrist visit

Today we meandered into Children's Hospital to see the surgeon who did Sarah's hips eight years ago. We only see him once a year now since she is pretty stable orthopedically.
And her hips and spine look good. Yay! I don't let him bend and stretch her because she finds it too painful, with all her dystonia. So he generally doesn't have much to do but look at xrays of her lovely bones. And stare at her in her wheelchair. And speak about her to the hovering residents, interns and medical students. I know he is always itching to get his hands on her to feel how her muscles respond, but he bows graciously to my wishes. And for this, I am grateful.
But today...today I gave him a gift! I gave him an issue. Something he could sink his teeth into and put his hands on. Oh, I could tell he was pleased.

Her left foot.

When in her stander her toes curl under, she lifts the front of her foot up and basically just weightbears on her heel. That poor heel. I know it is uncomfortable because it is bright red after being in the stander. So I presented it to the eager doc? What to do doctor? Help her. Please.
That's all he needed, he was off. Into the land of hands-on foot manipulation, rotation and pressure. Into the land of a medical discussion. The land of teaching the upcoming docs how to handle a curled up foot. Into the land of botox suggestions and a foot brace recommendation. He was so in his element.
I was happy for him and happy for Sarah. Happy that her doctor is so eager to help her, to make a difference in her life. And so happy to finally give him something he can fix for Sarah.
Afterall, it's been 8 years.

One of those days

Today is a refueling day. Everything is getting washed in this house. The clothes, the dishes, the people. Everything is getting dried too. And the house will be cleaned, dusted and organized. And I will get groceries.

And at the end of the day, I will put a log on the fire. And light it. Cause it is a raw New England day. A day for quilts.

And Sarah? Well, she will be the not-so-happy recipient of a hairwashing, fingernail cutting, moisturizing event.

And what gets us through this tedious day? Music. Happy music. That makes us smile and sing. Music makes everything easier. So what if it is a gray, cold, miserable day out there?

We are good, in here. Eating cereal. Her favorite.
